Strange Allies- The Progressive and the end of Posse Comitatus

The Progressive (You can guess where they are coming from) has an interesting article about the pentagon looking to gain authority over the 400,000 or so national guard and reservists across the country and grant the president and sec defense the ability to mobilize troops domestically.

In June, the U.S. Northern Command distributed a “Congressional Fact Sheet” entitled “Legislative Proposal for Activation of Federal Reserve Forces for Disasters.” That proposal would amend current law, thereby “authorizing the Secretary of Defense to order any unit or member of the Army Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Navy Reserve, and the Marine Corps Reserve, to active duty for a major disaster or emergency.”
Taken together, these reserve units would amount to “more than 379,000 military personnel in thousands of communities across the United States,” explained
Paul Stockton, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and America’s Security Affairs, in a letter to the National Governors Association, dated July 20.

Specifically cited is rebellion although this is being done under the guise of combatting another Katrina scale disaster.

The state governors are not pleased with this proposal nor should they be. This strips the governors of all vestiges of real power.

The article is worth a read, it seems like both sides of the aisle are getting scared of the power grab which is going on.
