Shadows of the NWO

I am a World Trade Center Survivor. I was one of the thousands to run from the building that fateful Tuesday morning and I spent the following months going to funerals for co workers. This had a profound effect on my politics. Prior to 2001 I was a Heinlein libertarian (also known as a neo libertarian these days) and on 9/12 I was ready to sign over as much power as possible to the government to ensure that this sort of thing never happened again. Over time, a more rational mindset re asserted itself and I am becoming increasingly horrified at where our civil liberties have eroded to.

China to Tibetan Monks - No Reincarnation for you...

China's administration for Religious Affairs has banned Buddhist monks from reincarnating without government permission.

According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is "an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation."

This is so sad its hilarious. I want to know what the form 27 b/6 ((c) Terry Gilliam) for this looks like. Do you get to select your preferred species?

Stardust

Posted in

When a movie is presented as a "new Princess Bride" it has quite a reputation to live up to. The 1987 Goldman/Reiner film is a timeless classic which is number 2 on my list of 5 DVD's to bring to a desert island. Needless to say I went into the theatre with some trepidation.

Stardust didn't disappoint. I won't say it is as good as PB, for such words are blasphemy and has resulted in the stoning of several movie critics and fen, but I will say its hands down the best fantasy movie I have seen in years.

Life with Training Wheels

When you are in primary or secondary school, and you get yourself in trouble (Financial, legal etc) you can usually rely on your parents to bail you out. Better parenting will force a child to work off the debt themselves, because this teaches the young person that bad decisions have consequences. You do these things not because you enjoy making your child suffer but rather so they understand that the world expects a person to be self reliant and responsible. If you make a bad business decision as a small business owner you may lose your company or your assets.

The obligatory D&D 4.0 post

Unless you are living under a rock, you could not have missed the fact that D&D 4 was announced at this years Gen Con. Reactions were mixed from attendees. Many felt it was too soon since 3.x was released, a few felt that wizards was turning the venerable title into a hybrid video game, but quite a few greeted the news with an open mind.

This is one geek which is happy about the news. Like it or hate it, D & D is the 800 lb gorilla in the gaming world.

GM Hold Music... the past catches up with me.

Posted in

A few years back, while in the midst of a long running D n D campaign, my group and I joked about needing hold music for when the GM took a smoking or bathroom break. So I dug up some appropriate Muzak, and dusted off a microphone and put together a 5 minute mp3.

At the time we were toying with the idea of putting out some gaming products so I thought this would be a great way to drive folks to our website. The popularity of the hold music blew me away. We quickly exceeded our allocated bandwidth, and had to bump up our hosting plan.

Terrorism a new four letter word?

Stop me if you have heard this one, 2 Eqyptians are speeding down a highway with a trunk full of explosives. Both are highly educated, but claim that these bombs are merely home-made fireworks. Authorities arrest them men, but immediately claim that there is no suspicion of terrorism.

Yousef Samir Megahed and Ahmed A. Sherif Mohamed are Egyptian Nationals legally here studying engineering at the University of South Florida. They were pulled over doing 60 in a 45. When the sheriff walked towards the car, the men became agitated.

Movie Review: The Darwin Awards

I have been a fan of the Darwin Awards for a long while now. Wendy Northcutt's newsletter, books and website (http://darwinawards.com/) never fail to entertain, and bring out the lighter side of human stupidity. So when Netflix (which now knows my tastes better then my wife) recommended a movie by the same name, how could I resist.

Joseph Fiennes plays a criminal profiler with a fascination for the Darwin Awards.

Immigration reform shot down.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush's immigration plan to legalize as many as 12 million unlawful immigrants while fortifying the border collapsed in the Senate on Thursday, crushing both parties' hopes of addressing the volatile issue before the 2008 elections.

Coming soon to England pre chewed food?

UK has long been cited by Gun control advocates as a gun free haven. Despite their strong gun control laws, violent crime is on the rise. In case you were expecting someone to admit that maybe guns were not the cause of violent crime a new answer has appeared on the scene.
