Goodbye

If you are very lucky, you have a person in your life that is truly larger then life. Who is ready at the drop of a hat to kick ass and take names, and completely commit to tilting at any passing windmill which has raised his ire. If you are really lucky, you gamed with him weekly and got to tag along for the ride.

My friend Mike was an gamer, navy seal, crusader for liberty, crude, romantic, quick with a laugh or a punch. Despite having been shot in the head more then once, he still had a memory which put mine to shame.

D & D 4e

I held off on my fourth edition review to give the game a chance. As Mike Mearls and others have commented, 4e plays far better then it reads. My initial impression was this is interesting, but not really D & D. I’ve come around on that, it is D & D but D & D brought back to its roots as an add-on to a tactical miniature game.

Based on the overall picture of the game, 4e seems to have the following design goals.

Gygax Passes

What do you say when the man who introduced you to all of your closest friends and provided some of your fondest memories for the last 27 years passes away?  Well I have been wrestling with that for days now and I am still coming up dry.

So since words escape me I will just say, thank you Mr Gygax.

Pigs or my return to Wow

I started playing World of Warcraft very shortly after it went live. Wow was a superior product as all of Blizzard's video games are, and for the next 18 months or so I spent an embarrassingly large amount of time playing a 3 foot tall professional acquisition specialist. I also paid for a subscription for my son, so we could adventure together. Of course those with teenage children know that most children would rather be subjected to hours of painful dental surgery while being flogged with a trout, than play video games in public with their parents.

The obligatory D&D 4.0 post

Unless you are living under a rock, you could not have missed the fact that D&D 4 was announced at this years Gen Con. Reactions were mixed from attendees. Many felt it was too soon since 3.x was released, a few felt that wizards was turning the venerable title into a hybrid video game, but quite a few greeted the news with an open mind.

This is one geek which is happy about the news. Like it or hate it, D & D is the 800 lb gorilla in the gaming world.

GM Hold Music... the past catches up with me.

A few years back, while in the midst of a long running D n D campaign, my group and I joked about needing hold music for when the GM took a smoking or bathroom break. So I dug up some appropriate Muzak, and dusted off a microphone and put together a 5 minute mp3.

At the time we were toying with the idea of putting out some gaming products so I thought this would be a great way to drive folks to our website. The popularity of the hold music blew me away. We quickly exceeded our allocated bandwidth, and had to bump up our hosting plan.
